Music and Art classes are offered as part of the regular curriculum at Christ the King School (CTK) for all grades.
Art: Classes are held weekly. With the NYS Learning Standards as the backbone, curriculum is based on a spiral learning curve. Students begin with the very basics and build on their knowledge and skill level with every passing year. The focus on the fine art curriculum is to foster a safe environment where students are able to discover themselves within the realm of the requirements. Many times lessons cross over to what students are learning in the general classroom. As a STREAM school, art lessons connect to topics studied in science, math, ELA, religion, etc. Students learn about artists from the past as well as contemporary artists working today. As a STREAM school, the Department was able to receive a grant to create a photography program. Cameras and memory cards were purchased to kick start things. Students in the middle school learn the basics of photography on a point and shoot camera.
CTK holds an Annual Art Show showcasing the students' work. Students also participate in the Diocesan Art Show held annually. Students' in 3rd-8th grade are also able to participate in set design for the school play (including creating backdrops and props).
Music: The General Music curriculum at CTK is uniquely designed to promote active learning of musical instruments and an appreciation of different musical styles. Inspired by the Federal Common Core Education Standards, NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) Sequential Guide for Music Instruction for Classroom and General Music, the Orff Approach, and the Kodály method, each music class emphasizes experiencing, creating, and performing.
Thanks to generous donations to the Wishlist, CTK's music program now includes class instruction of ukulele, tuned-percussion instruments called Bookwackers, and keyboard.
In December each class performs as a choir in our annual Christmas Program. Additional performance opportunities include participation in our annual audition-based Spring Musical performed at Mount St. Mary Academy.
Private lessons in Voice, Piano, and Violin are available after-school for interested CTK families. For more information, please email Ms. Santa Maria at [email protected].
